Changing the interpersonal effectiveness of your residents is a process, not a single event.
Online Portal
Always Available. Always Online. Always Convenient.
Our online portal is a dedicated, private space for your residents review simulations and receive individualized coaching and feedback.
Our online portal is the gateway to all training features. It includes:
Inserting your residents into real world job scenarios.
Simulations are recurring training events that are conducted quarterly, monthly, or even weekly. We have an extensive library of professionally filmed video scenarios that highlight the most important and frequently occurring patient, caregiver, and interprofessional interactions. The resident is then prompted to provide their video response to what they observed and how they would respond if they were the physician in the scenario. We further provide opportunity for the resident to review and re-record their video responses.
The simulation experience encompasses:
Employing the human touch.
Resident submit their simulation video responses to Javelin’s Elite Assessor center, where our behavioral scientists drill into the data, discovering behavioral insights that highlight ways to change behaviors, advance skills, and ultimately improve quality of care and service excellence. Our Elite Assessor Center features:
Everyone wants to know if they’re on the right track.
We provide the tools for residents to see how they are doing, providing:
Underneath the training process and state of the art technology lies a cocktail of scientifically proven adult learning strategies that work together to improve behaviors that ultimately will transfer to on the job performance. Our Resident Training Program is rooted in four evidence-based approaches:
Simulations
Research has consistently shown that simulations are a powerful way to learn as they allow individuals to make connections with every day experiences (citation). There is a big difference between studying about how to effectively interact with patients and colleagues and actually doing it. When it comes to developing interpersonal effectiveness, it isn’t enough to know about them in theory, you must practice them, you must live them. That is the power of simulations.
Microlearning
Research shows that adults learn best and retain most when information is given in small morsels. Instead of lots of study and classes, micro learning is deployed in small nuggets, more frequently and the learner is typically given greater control as to when that training is executed. Our simulations are brief, but intense, optimally designed around how residents learn.
Formative Evaluation & Feedback
Formative assessment is a fancy way of saying we learn when we get personal, individualized feedback. Research shows that a individual can often be their toughest critic of what she or he did right or wrong. In our resident program, we actually require the person to watch their own performance. At first, it is uncomfortable. But when forced to watch ourselves, we critique ourselves and find ways to do it better the next time.
Individualized Coaching
Appropriate, behavioral feedback & coaching has been shown in research, including our own, to help accelerate growth in interpersonal effectiveness. Not only does it do this, it also provides transparency to how the resident is performing and provides objective, detailed feedback on what their strengths are and what areas they need to improve in.
Developed by our team of behavioral psychologists, curricula design experts, and physician subject matter experts, our simulation-based curriculum is tightly aligned to the ACGME milestones. It also features:
By basing our program on a structured curriculum tightly aligned to the ACGME milestones, we ensure that residents are ready for the most demanding interpersonal situations they will face as they care for patients, interact with caregivers, and work with other health care professionals.
In a groundbreaking pilot study, our resident training program demonstrated a 25% improvement in resident interpersonal effectiveness compared to a control group in only three weeks. Subsequent studies showed accelerated improvement in interpersonal demonstrating a 42% improvement.

Engaging
Simulations programs have been teaching life-saving clinical skills for years. Now it’s time to use these same simulated environments to improve physician interpersonal skills. Give your physicians a rich, private space to perfect their performance so you can cultivate doctors who genuinely want to lead and caregivers who can show they care.
Convenient
We understand that residents are really busy. That is why they can access our training program any time and any place via their laptop, tablet, or smart phone. Residents can improve their interpersonal effectiveness at any pace and place, fitting training around their lives rather than their lives around training.
Economical
No hovering consultants, no expensive seminars, no need to step into a classroom, no lost time from work. Period. We keep doctors in front of their patients, not in front of a whiteboard. Our resident training program is the smart choice in the lean world of GME.
Our Assessors Are Highly Reliable
Javelin assessors are calibrated above a .92 level of reliability compared to an industry average (based on meta-analysis) of .53.
.70 is considered minimum acceptable standard
