The best chief residents are skilled in a range of interpersonal issues, including teaching aptitude, leadership, teamwork and coaching others.

Javelin HCP Solutions has developed a program specific to chief residents. It is an eight week program consisting of online simulations, individualized feedback, access to our training portal and live interactions with a seasoned coach. It relies on the same technology on which our other programs are built, including on demand simulations, actionable coaching feedback and behavioral modeling.

Chief resident is a special role, one that affords a lifetime benefit to those chosen for this critical assignment. Seldom is a chief resident chosen solely on clinical skills or exam scores. Every program director knows the demands of the job extend well beyond clinical and technical competence. It requires skills such as leading, motivating others, coaching, organizing others, teaching, promoting teamwork, managing stress and much more.

How it Works

1. Leadership Inventory

Working with one of our seasoned coaches a baseline is established in a variety of leadership, coaching and communication competencies. These insights are augmented with a set of Javelin leadership simulations. This inventory provides the basis of a customized development plan for the chief resident.

2. Develop Plan

Based on the leadership inventory, an eight week enhanced leadership plan is developed. The Javelin team carefully leverages simulations, on-the-job activities, and live coaching sessions aligned to the learner's leadership plan. Efforts are focused specifically on the leadership demands of the chief resident role. This means simulations where they are instructing and coaching other residents, navigating delicate interpersonal challenges, promoting teamwork and coordinating others.

3. Execute Plan

In addition to the simulations, Javelin includes bi-weekly sessions using our live, one-on-one video technology where the chief resident and coach can dive deeper into the simulations. They also discuss and apply learnings to on-the-job interpersonal challenges the chief resident may be facing.
